Enacted in 1997, The State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) provides federal funds to states for coverage of children and some parents with incomes above the levels needed to qualify for Medicaid, but for whom no affordable private health insurance plan is available. These programs are jointly funded by federal and state government funding, and is administered by the individual state. Eligibility guidelines are published on each SCHIP website. In sum, SCHIP covers roughly 4 million children.
